algonquin park

and I was once again captivated by water and sky...

This was the most peaceful camping trip ever. The temperature was surprisingly low. Our wood was wet and we couldn't really start a fire at night, but the waters were still and calm. We wound along river bends carried by the languid current that makes one forgetful. Birds flit about...birds I had never seen. Out there, you realize how complicated you can make your life seem. Ok, it's really pretty complicated, but we compound things at times. Out there, you breathe, try not to disturb anything, and life thanks you with a gentle, wind-blown kiss and whispers a beautiful secret.

I remember hearing for the first time the low guttural sound of the [Crap! I forgot the name of the bird again. If anyone knows, please tell me. It's a rather shy bird that is seen in May by only a few. It lives in marshy areas and sounds like a sink through which a thick liquid is being poured.] Anyway, it was scary coz it sounded like a huge creature would rise from the marsh at any moment. A BITTERN!!! That's what it's called. I can sleep now.

too easy...um, sorry, i couldn't help it.

sometimes your mind just follows a particular track.

These were the cute little bats we saw when we went spelunking.

I stayed at a hostel in Ottawa that was once a prison. This is death row.

I also saw a cell used for solitary confinement. I wasn't even in darkness, but I could feel the heaviness all around. I was once in total darkness in a cave in Quebec (Gatineau region, I think), on a guided tour. It was the strangest feeling---a falling away of the physical. I didn't know where my body was. It was more like I thought I knew because I could remember where it was supposed to be.

Ugh...imagine being imprisoned like that, only aware of your mind, then losing all sense of that too. Or, at least, I figure that's what would happen.

Oh, not to worry! 'Coz you could end up here...

The prisoner would stand here, noose around neck. The floor would open up...

...and the body would fall through, dangling in front of a crowd delighting in the dreadful spectacle---a standing ovation!

I think this was taken in 1999.

I don't think these old pictures are particularly good, but I like them for various reasons. Plus, if I'm going to organize photos, they should all be in one place. Sorry if these aren't anything great.

mesh

This was the view from my St. Joe's first year room. I've really been lucky with sunsets.

i used to daydream a lot

Ok, so I still daydream a lot. Sometimes, at work I look out my window and realize that the student sitting across from me has noticed me staring out and I should really be more responsible, being permanent staff and all.

This was taken outside the Adamson Estate, where I took piano lessons for a number of years. It truly was a place for inspiration. I remember when the Estate was transformed into the RCM. I took a tour around and walked into this studio with THE BEST view of the lake. It was 19th Century Romanticism at its best---Brahms, Chopin, Berlioz, the lure of la vie bohémienne. I prayed that it would be the studio I'd take lessons in. And it was!!

Then, there were the few occasions when I imagined I was Ariel, the Little Mermaid, staring at the sea (which was really just Lake Ontario).

fire!

This was the view outside my Clevedon Drive bedroom. I spent a lot of time looking out that window. I rarely see sunsets like these anymore.

The first two were actually taken very early one morning. The wind woke me up. I looked out the window, grabbed my now-defunct Kodak that would eventually be dropped, cracking the lens, be doused with red wine from a St. Joe's Christmas Wine & Cheese, and years later, be sadly put away.
